The Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ) today hosted a delegation from the Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) in a landmark engagement aimed at fostering collaboration in advancing teacher professionalism and promoting quality education.

The visit focused on knowledge sharing around teacher professionalism, the Code of Ethics and the standards guiding the teaching profession.

Welcoming the delegation, the Acting Registrar of the Teaching Council of Zambia, Mrs. Josephine M. Shamputa, expressed gratitude to PROTUZ for its commitment to strengthening collaboration. She emphasized the critical role teacher unions have played in supporting TCZ’s mandate since its inception.

“Our history as a Council is incomplete without acknowledging the contribution of unions in dissemination and orientation programmes on the Teaching Profession Act No. 5 of 2013, the Code of Ethics, and the registration processes,” Mrs. Shamputa noted. She further highlighted that TCZ remains committed to promoting teacher professionalism through Continuing Professional Development (CPD), adherence to the Code of Ethics and the Standards of Practice.

“TCZ strives to remain relevant in ensuring quality education by enforcing CPD, upholding professional values and strengthening the standards of practice. These are the tools necessary to advance teacher professionalism,” she added.

Speaking during the engagement, PROTUZ Secretary General, Dr. Kangwa Musenge, expressed delight at the partnership and commended TCZ for its notable achievements under challenging conditions. He praised the Council’s resource management and infrastructure development, noting that the new TCZ building has brought pride and prestige to the teaching profession.

Dr. Musenge reaffirmed PROTUZ’s commitment to collaborate more closely with TCZ, particularly in information dissemination and addressing misconceptions among teachers regarding the regulator’s mandate.

“Effective information sharing between PROTUZ and TCZ is vital for consistent sensitization. Through constant engagement and continuous outreach, we can help correct distorted information and build confidence among teachers,” Dr. Musenge said.

The engagement underscores the importance of strong collaboration between TCZ and teacher unions in safeguarding teacher welfare, enhancing professionalism, and advancing quality education in Zambia.
