Bowman Lusambo arrives at the Kabwe Magistrate’s Court where he is expected to be judged in the case he is charged with unlawful assembly.

The verdict comes after months of legal back-and-forth, during which Lusambo, currently serving time on separate charges at Mwembeshi Correctional Facility, has maintained his innocence and dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.

Lusambo, 48, is jointly charged with four others PF Central Province chairman Billy Sichamba, director Saidi Chibwana, businessman Mathews Changwe, and bus conductor Martin Simfukwe, over a 2023 incident in Kabwe where he was accused of gathering a crowd likely to cause fear and breach of peace.

During trial, the prosecution called seven witnesses, while the defence presented five, arguing that the gathering was spontaneous and sparked by Lusambo’s public profile, not by any incitement or intent to disturb public order.

Resident magistrate Gloria Chipasha is expected to hand down her long-awaited ruling today, marking the conclusion of a case that has tested the line between political popularity and criminal liability.
