At least 11 people have died on the spot while 18 others are battling for their lives in the Nyimba District Hospital following a Fatal Road Traffic Accident which happened today around 12:00 hours.

The accident occurred around Kenneth Kaunda area when a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Hiace collided head-on.

According to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba, the Toyota Hilux was traveling from Nyimba to Kacholola while the Toyota Hiace was coming from the opposite direction.

He said the driver of the Toyota Hilux attempted to overtake a vehicle without noticing the oncoming Hiace, resulting in the fatal collision.

Mr Mweemba said all six passengers in the Toyota Hilux died on the spot, while five others died from the Toyota Hiace which had 23 passengers on board.

He said a total of 29 people were in the two vehicles at the time of the accident.
